Grand Masters Charity Appeal -
Cancer Research N.I.
Back to Charity Home Page

ORANGEMEN across Northern Ireland and the Republic have pulled
out all the stops last year to raise an amazing £121,888
for the Grand Master's Charity Appeal. Further funding has
resulted in a new total of £124,000.
Beneficiary of the appeal was the Cancer Research Campaign,
whose UK executives flew across to join Northern Ireland officials
for the presentation of the massive cheque, at an event in
Schomberg House.
The Grand Master of the Grand Orange Lodge, Wor. Bro. Robert
S. Saulters, was pleasantly surprised that the first ever
Grand Master's Appeal raised so much.
In fact the donation is the largest single Northern Ireland
donation to Cancer Research, something which the Grand Master
puts down to the generous nature and charitable outlook of
Orange brethren and their supporters across Northern Ireland
and the border counties of the Republic.
The final amount was revealed on the night by representatives
of the Orange family - disabled, ex-service, Juniors, Orange
bands, Grand Lodge and the Ladies Association.
The reception evening was attended by Grand Lodge representatives
from as far away as County Monaghan, while many representatives
from Cancer Research branches had their first opportunity
to visit Orange headquarters at Schomberg House.
Those present heard from Cancer Research medical professionals
that the battle against cancer is ongoing, but that mortality
rates for those contacting various forms of cancer including
breast cancer is being reduced.
The Grand Master's Charity ran alongside, but did not replace,
the charities that Lodges and Districts already support. And
the good news for Cancer Research is that late monies are
still coming in, boosting the final total the Orange Order
has provided towards research for all of the Northern Ireland
community.
It's just an example of how the Orange Order is on the march
for a better future for everyone...
Cancer Research N.I is part of Cancer Research U.K., Britain's
leading charity and is dedicated to the research, treatment
and prevention of cancer. It funds about two thirds of all
cancer research in the U.K. and is the leading provider of
research money in universities and medical schools. It supports
a number of groundbreaking research programmes in Northern
Ireland including:-
- Queen's University and City Hospital - Ovarian Cancer
Research Unit.
- Department of Oncology, Queen's University.
- Department of Oncology, Belfast City Hospital.
- University of Ulster, Jordanstown - Targeting Tumours
with Nitric Oxide.
- University of Ulster - Gene Therapy.
- Belfast City Hospital - Improved treatment for Bowel Cancer.
Cancer does not discriminate between people of different
backgrounds and traditions. By supporting Cancer Research
Northern Ireland the Order, as a collective body, has shown
its commitment to improving life in the Province. It allowed
us to demonstrate that we are as concerned about social conditions
as we are with civil and religious liberties.
