Grand Master Helps Put Twelfth Parades In Focus

Article 2 ~ April 2004

The Twelfth is set to be in focus in a positive way over the next few months.

The launch of the Orange Order's photo competition on the Twelfth aims to attract public attention to the fun and the colour of Northern Ireland's largest outdoor festival.

And when the Grand Master and willing helpers gathered at Shaw's Bridge for a press launch for the event, there was certainly plenty of attention from walkers and members of the public.

Many of them expect to see Orangemen on July 12 at Shaw's Bridge, but the sight of an Orange banner and Wor. Bro. Saulters arriving at Edenderry so early raised a few eyebrows.

The Grand Master hopes that members of the public will join with Orange brethren in entering the competition, which runs until April 23. And he urged those with photos of the Twelfth to enter them in the competition.

The event is being sponsored by the Ulster-Scots Agency and the Community Relations Council, as well as individual sponsors Victor Stewart Enterprises, S.D. Kells and Nelson Singleton Solicitors. Prints with negatives should be entered and the top photos will be produced as postcards, while an exhibition of the best photographs will tour the province in the Autumn.

"The Twelfth is our biggest day of the year, watched by tens of thousands of spectators, many of whom take photographs of family or friends on parade," said David Hume, Director of Services.

"This competition gives the opportunity to put the Twelfth into the right focus, and we would encourage as many as possible to enter."

Entry forms can be obtained from Schomberg House on 028 9070 1122.
