The Orange Order has focused on the Twelfth of July parades
as the subject for a photographic competition and exhibition,
and the results provide many different interpretations of
what the Twelfth means to people within and outside the Orange
Institution.
Judges were given a considerable headache by the scope and
quality of the entries for the competition.
But the final marks showed that Co. Armagh - the home of
Orangeism - had led the way when it came to the Orange In
Focus exhibition. The winner of the event is Mrs. Jennifer
McCusker of Portadown, with a photo of the drums of Boconnell
LOL on parade at the Twelfth in Killylea in 2000. Second place
went to Alan Weir of Banbridge with a study of a Lambeg drummer
and third was Margaret Gregg of Bangor with her photo of Cottown
Pipe Band on parade through the town.
Director of Services David Hume said: "This was a first
attempt at highlighting the photographic talents of our community
as well as the colour of the Twelfth, and we look forward
to an excellent photographic exhibition which can go on display
across the Province."
The event was judged by a panel of independent judges and
was grant funded by the Ulster-Scots Agency and Community
Relations Council. Private sponsorship has been provided by
S.D. Kells, Victor Stewart Enterprises and Nelson-Singleton
Solicitors.
