Plans by the Orange Institution to represent its cultural
tradition at the St. Patrick's Day Festival in Cork had to
be cancelled amid plans by republicans to protest.
Desperate to focus attention away from bank robberies and
murder, republicans turned on the willingness of the Orange
Order to present a positive side of Northern Ireland to the
people of Cork.
The annoyance of Sinn Fein of the acceptance and planned
participation did not deter the Institution.
But the fact that the authorities could not guarantee the
safety of those from the Orange family - including young people
- who would have been taking part meant that they could not,
in all conscience, continue with their plans.
"We have received much support from the organisers,
and many positive messages congratulating us on being prepared
to travel to Cork," said Orange Grand Secretary, Brother
Drew Nelson.
