The Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland has not welcomed the proposals
for setting up a Commission to review the Royal Ulster Constabulary.
Grand Lodge believe that the Chief Constable and his Senior
Officers have the ability to review their role, without interference.
The suggestion of the appointment of the last Governor of
Hong Kong, Mr. Chris Patten, to head a Commission to reform
the Royal Ulster Constabulary will bring no comfort to the
members of the Loyal Orange Institution.
It must be remembered that in the mid 1980's, when Mr. Patten
was a Minister in the Northern Ireland Office, that it was
he who made the infamous decision in the City of Londonderry
to change the Council name to "Derry City Council".
