The Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland, in making its initial
response to the Patten Commission report is disgusted, but
not surprised, to note the recommendations in relation to
change of name and symbols of the force.
These changes are clearly designed to besmirch the gallant
memory of those who have served their country, many paying
the supreme sacrifice, in defeating terrorism against the
state.
The Commission is effectively calling for the disbandment
of the R.U.C. by asking existing officers to take a new oath,
expressing an explicit commitment to upholding human rights.
This infers that they previously did not act with fairness,
integrity, diligence and impartiality in the execution of
their duties.
Once again, the Government has implemented a process designed
to appease terrorism but unfortunately many of the recommendations,
if implemented, will only feed terrorism.
Grand Lodge urges all its members to study the report in
full and make their representations through the consultative
process in due course
