The Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland has reiterated its condemnation
of violence.
It is appreciated that in a democratic society there is a
right of peaceful protest. There is however no place for violence.
Not only is violence morally wrong but damages the legitimate
cause of Portadown District L.O.L. No. 1 as they attempt to
have their civil liberties restored.
The protests called for this afternoon by Portadown District
must be peaceful, and it is the responsibility of the local
organisers to ensure this is the case. It is essential that
protests are not used by malcontents, who have no real interest
in the Orange Institution, as a cover for violence.
To those who have or would engage in violence we can only
say STOP. You are not acting on our behalf. Your actions damage
an honourable cause.
