Carnmoney District L.O.L. has carefully considered the recent
High Court Judgement regarding the Arch at Glengormley.
To borrow from Shakespeare this really does seem to be much
ado about nothing.
It is a fact that in 2001 consent was (albeit belatedly)
received for the erection of the Arch. This was delayed because
the District was not aware of the requirements outwith the
question of Insurance that has always been in place.
As soon as the District became fully aware of all the requirements
they complied with them.
In 2002 the necessary application was made and consent given
and the Arch erected.
It is our view that the legal action was little more than
a waste of taxpayers money and an attempt to deny a display
of our culture. We do not believe that it was prompted by
a desire to ensure that every piece of legislation is adhered
to.
The judgement has however highlighted the efforts of those
who have no interest in mutual respect and toleration but
who wish to heighten community tension when it refers to the
fact that prior to the year 2000 the erection of the Arch
attracted little attention. Since that time however, there
have been those intent on attacking this display of our culture
and creating difficulties for the entire community.
We look forward to the erection of the Arch next year and
subsequent years as we continue to promote the Ulster Scots
culture.
