The Orange Order wants to see plans for water privatisation
re-routed.
The Grand Lodge of Ireland, which represents 1200 Lodges
across Northern Ireland and the Republic, has come out strongly
against the plans, and says that they will be to the detriment
of the entire community.
In a statement the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland said that
the issue had been raised by a number of local Orange Lodges
and Districts, concerned at the overall implications of the
move.
"Our members are alarmed at the proposal to introduce
water charges, which they feel will have an adverse impact
on the entire community," the Grand Master of the Institution,
Robert Saulters, said.
"We also feel that with increased rates, maintenance
and insurance bills for our halls, the imposition of water
charges would be another and highly unwelcome burden,"
he added.
The Grand Lodge urged members of the Institution to make
their views on water charges known to their local councillors,
MLAs and MPs.
