The ruling body of the Orange Order has expressed its concerns
about the continuing erosion of the Sabbath following the
inauguration of Sunday racing at Downpatrick.
A spokesman for the Grand Lodge of Ireland said, "Racing
on a Sunday has serious implications for those families who
now have to work when ordinarily they would spend their Sunday
engaged in worship and family activities. We see this as another
nail in the coffin of the traditional Sunday".
"In this day and age it is difficult for families to
find time to be together. Traditionally Sunday
has given many families the opportunity to get together, share
a meal and catch up with what's been happening during the
week".
