The Orange Order said this evening it was delighted with
the climb-down by the Parades Commission over its "arrogant"
decision to ban Orangemen from parading along the Springfield
Road in West Belfast.
Calling on all involved to ensure that tomorrow's Whiterock
Parade passed off peacefully, a spokesman said the Orange
Order now planned to intensify its campaign to have the Parades
Commission scrapped and replaced by a process that would promote
parity of cultural esteem more effectively.
"Thanks to all the hard work put in by Orangemen, community
workers, politicians, and churchmen we managed to get the
Parades Commission to see sense - this time.
"However, to ensure this situation never arises again,
we must continue the campaign to get rid of this ridiculous
quango which - because of its arrogant failure to think through
its decisions and its pathetic readiness to appease republican
fascists wanting to eradicate Loyalist culture - has become
a menace to improving community relations."
The Order said it recognised that some residents near the
Springfield Road would be disappointed by the Commission's
decision but called on them to show tolerance and allow the
parade to pass peacefully.
