Orangemen in north and west Belfast are to request a formal
review of the Parades Commission's decision to route this
Saturday's Whiterock Parade through the old Mackies factory
site.
A meeting of Belfast's No 9 District last night agreed unanimously
that the Commission's determination on the parade as it now
stands was "totally unacceptable and bound to fuel inter-community
tensions."
It's understood that a number of other groups in the area
will also be lodging applications for a formal review of the
Commission's decision.
A spokesman for the Belfast County Grand Orange Lodge said
a number of meetings will be taking take place today involving
Orangemen, political representatives and community leaders
to discuss what steps should be taken to defuse what was described
as a potentially highly volatile situation.
