A delegation representing the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland,
the Royal Black Institution and the Independent Loyal Orange
Institution met today with the Secretary of State for Northern
Ireland, Peter Hain MP, to discuss parading issues.
The delegation made clear its view that the present legislative
framework governing parades in Northern Ireland is fundamentally
flawed and can be improved upon.
"We had a positive meeting with the Secretary of State
today and we have indicated our willingness to engage with
the Government with a view to investigating a more equitable
system of regulating public events. Nothing is ruled out in
these discussions.
"Prior to this meeting we have met with senior representatives
from the Church of Ireland, the Presbyterian Church in Ireland,
the Methodist Church, PSNI, the DUP and UUP and have meetings
planned in the near future with the Alliance Party and the
Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission. It is also expected
that meetings will take place with the SDLP and the Irish
Government.
Further meetings are also planned with the Secretary of State."
