A senior delegation from three of the Loyal Orders this afternoon
held a groundbreaking talks with members of the nationalist
SDLP as the latest in an ongoing series of meetings with a
wide range of interested bodies to address the difficulties
surrounding parades and other high impact public events.
The eight-man delegation was led by Robert Saulters, Grand
Master of the Orange Order, William Logan, Sovereign Grand
Master of the Royal Black Institution and David McConaghie
of the Independent Orange Order.
Drew Nelson, Grand Secretary of the Orange Order, who was
also present at the meeting at Stormonts Parliament
Buildings, said: We wanted to explain to the SDLP our
view that the present legislative framework governing parades
in Northern Ireland is fundamentally flawed and can be improved
upon.
This preliminary meeting provided for an honest exchange
of views and we believe it was constructive. The SDLP has
agreed to meet with us again in the near future.
