The Orange Order has condemned last night's (9 June) attempted
break-in at a Co. Londonderry Orange Hall which was only rebuilt
two years ago after being badly damaged by vandals.
In last night's incident a window was smashed at the Killygullib
Hall near Kilrea in what local Orangemen believe may have
been an attempt to set fire to the building. Ten days ago,
on 30 May, the hall was paint-bombed.
A spokesman for the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland described
the latest attack as "mindless hooliganism".
"In common with many Orange Halls, the Killygullib hall
serves as much more than just a meeting place for the local
Orange lodge. Among other things it hosts a monthly poultry
fair and is used by a playgroup, several church missions and
other social groups. Last night's attack on the hall wasn't
just aimed at Orangemen, it was an attack on an entire community
in an isolated and poorly served rural area.
"Those responsible should be truly ashamed of themselves
and we urge anyone who might be able to help identify them
to contact the police as soon as possible."
